Women’s March Bali

From Renon’s streets to 2020’s vibrant online rally, Women’s March Bali 2018-2020 ignites the island with fearless voices, bold colours and unstoppable solidarity for equality.

What is Women’s March Bali?

Women’s March Bali is part of the powerful global Women’s March movement, dedicated to advocating for human rights, gender equality, environmental justice, and social change. Since its initiation in 2018, Women’s March Bali has been a pivotal platform for diverse communities, including women, gender and sexual minorities, workers, indigenous communities, and people with disabilities, to unite, express their demands, and challenge systemic injustice through collective action.

The Challenge

In Bali and across Indonesia, women and marginalised communities continue to face severe systemic challenges such as gender-based violence, discrimination against sexual and gender minorities, limited reproductive health rights, media censorship, environmental injustice, and a lack of inclusive and protective policies. Statistics from Indonesia’s National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) highlight alarming rates of gender-based violence, with thousands of cases remaining unreported due to stigma, fear, and systemic hurdles. Additionally, marginalised groups face significant barriers to employment, healthcare, and political representation, exacerbating existing inequalities.

Our Approach

Women’s March Bali employs an inclusive, participatory, and multi-dimensional strategy to advocate for change. Each year, we organise pre-events and consolidation meetings designed to build community awareness, solidarity, and action. These events include vibrant garage sales for fundraising, workshops for creative poster-making, thought-provoking film screenings accompanied by panel discussions, talk shows on pressing social issues, free HIV testing services, and musical performances by local artists.

Our annual marches provide a public and powerful platform for collective advocacy, where participants passionately voice their demands, such as the immediate ratification of the Sexual Violence Elimination Bill, rejection of discriminatory policies like the Omnibus Law, ending discrimination against sexual minorities, and safeguarding indigenous land rights.

Our Impact

Since our first march in 2018, Women’s March Bali has successfully mobilised hundreds of participants annually, significantly increasing visibility and dialogue around human rights and social justice issues. Our efforts have garnered substantial media coverage from prominent news outlets such as Tribun Bali, Nusa Bali, City Nomads, Coconuts Bali, Honeycombers, and more, amplifying our message far beyond Bali’s borders. We have also facilitated important policy discussions, community dialogues, and advocacy initiatives, directly influencing public attitudes and raising awareness about critical social justice issues.

By uniting diverse voices and advocating steadfastly for justice and equality, Women’s March Bali continues to inspire significant societal change and empower communities to challenge and dismantle systemic discrimination.
