Training Programme
Empowering students and peer counsellors with the skills and knowledge to effectively tackle gender-based violence and create safer communities.
What is our Training Programme?
The Training Programme by GSHR aims to equip diverse communities, especially high school students and peer counsellors, with vital skills and knowledge to understand, prevent, and respond to issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and cyber-based sexual violence (kekerasan seksual siber/KSS). Established as part of our broader commitment to education and advocacy, our programme addresses pressing issues related to gender equality, sexuality, and human rights, providing practical, sensitive, and informed training sessions.
We have successfully conducted two major training sessions: one in 2024 specifically targeting high school students, and an earlier session in 2019 designed for potential peer counsellors. Despite the different target audiences, both trainings emphasised addressing cyber-based gender and sexual violence.
Our training modules include comprehensive insights into various forms of sexual violence, including online harassment, cyberbullying, hate speech, and revenge porn. Sessions focus on core counselling techniques, recording and managing cases responsibly, and promoting robust community support structures to protect vulnerable individuals.
The Challenge
Indonesia faces significant challenges regarding gender-based violence, both physically and online. A 2022 report by SAFEnet highlights that 23% of online gender-based violence cases in Southeast Asia involve adolescents aged 12-17. Despite existing laws, such as Law No.12 of 2022, awareness and understanding among young people remain limited. Victims, particularly young individuals, often lack awareness of their rights and available resources, making them highly vulnerable to ongoing abuse, mental health issues, and societal stigma.
Peer counsellors and frontline responders often struggle due to inadequate training, limited knowledge of sensitive counselling methods, and unclear procedures in handling confidential information. The need for professional, empathetic, and structured interventions is critical to creating safer environments.
Our Approach
Needs Assessment and Material Preparation
We conduct thorough assessments to identify participants’ specific requirements and craft tailored educational materials, leveraging resources such as Purple Code’s Handbook on Online Gender-Based Violence (Kekekerasan Berbasis Gender Online).
Volunteer Recruitment and Training
Volunteers are crucial in extending our programme’s reach. We offer intensive workshops conducted by expert trainers, ensuring that volunteers are well-prepared to facilitate discussions, counselling, and education on GBV and KSS.
School and Community Collaboration
We actively collaborate with local educational institutions and student bodies such as OSIS and BEM PM Universitas Udayana, fostering community-wide awareness and support networks.
Direct Outreach and Workshops
Targeted interventions are conducted in selected junior and senior high schools across Denpasar, prioritising students in school leadership roles to amplify the programme’s reach and impact.
Evaluation and Follow-Up
We ensure programme effectiveness and sustainability through pre- and post-assessment tests, student-created advocacy content (such as posters shared on social media), and continuous monitoring and feedback loops.
Our Impact
Since the inception of our training programme, we have witnessed substantial improvements in awareness, sensitivity, and responsiveness among participants and the broader community. Students and peer counsellors are now better equipped to identify various forms of sexual violence and provide immediate psychological support and effective referrals to specialised services.
Our collaborative approach has significantly strengthened local capacities and established stronger networks of peer support, promoting safer online and offline environments. The structured case-handling processes we introduced have improved data collection and reporting accuracy, crucial for advocacy and policy development.
Ultimately, our programme lays the foundation for a safer, more informed community that actively works towards gender equality and human rights, reflecting our unwavering commitment to creating meaningful societal change.
