NONGKI

Long-running discussion series that brings people together to openly explore gender, sexuality, human rights, and environmental issues in a welcoming, thought-provoking space.

What is NONGKI?

NONGKI (Nongkrong dan Diskusi) is a vibrant and inclusive discussion programme organised by the Centre for Gender, Sexuality, and Human Rights (GSHR) since 2017. Regularly held, NONGKI provides a welcoming space where individuals can gather, engage, and reflect deeply on critical issues surrounding gender, sexuality, environmental sustainability, and human rights. Our programme facilitates both private and public sessions featuring a diverse range of topics delivered by knowledgeable speakers and experts, aiming to educate, raise awareness, and inspire collective action.

The Challenge

In Indonesia, conversations around gender, sexuality, and human rights often face cultural taboos, misinformation, and social stigma. This results in widespread misunderstandings and limited public discourse on essential issues affecting marginalised groups. Further, there is a significant lack of accessible platforms where open, informed, and respectful discussions can take place. Such limitations hinder social progress, maintain harmful stereotypes, and impede advocacy and policy-making efforts in addressing inequality and injustice.
